Passing Reggie and Grant’s home, it occurred to Jesse he should let her know. Before he could insert the key into the lock, Reggie stood in the doorway, a knowing grin upon her lips. Appearing unsurprised to see them together, she took in the pair in a single glance, lingering on their joined hands. “What are you two up to?” she asked in a mock stern voice.

Jesse and Milan exchanged glances too intimate to be misunderstood.

“We’re going up to Milan’s place, that’s all,” Jesse said. “I didn’t want you to worry when I didn’t come back.”

“I had a feeling,” Reggie fairly purred in a very self-satisfied voice. “What about tomorrow?”

“We’ll pick you up tomorrow for Outfest. Milan’s got a car. He said I can drive it.”

“Oh, he did, did he? Sounds good. You two boys have fun now. I’ll see you in the morning.”

They made their farewells, and then carefully crossed the intersection, hands twined together. As they climbed the hill that led up to Milan’s home, Jesse commented, “You know something?”

“Do I know what?”

“I have a feeling she had this planned the whole time.”

They reached the crest of the hill, pausing at the end of Milan’s driveway where the immaculate Mercury Marquis patiently sat. “Then I have even more to be grateful to her for.”

Milan pulled Jesse into his arms and kissed him softly. “I will have to make a chocolate in her honor, I think.”

Jesse nodded his agreement. “I think she’d like that.”

They entered the house together, leaving the rest of the world behind.
